Mayoral

Mayoral, founded in 1989, is a gallery located in Barcelona and Paris. The gallery articulates an intergenerational exhibition program focused on the best of post-war and contemporary Spanish art, promoting artists such as Tàpies, Chillida, Millares, Saura, Zóbel, Francés, and Chordà, alongside works by key twentieth-century avant-garde artists such as Miró and Picasso, as well prominent artists of today’s generation.
 
The gallery develops projects that are rigorously curated and grow out of an exhaustive process of research. The gallery relies upon the support of the artists’ families, foundations and other institutions as well as collectors and museums, both public and private, when it comes to accomplishing its mission.
 
In recent years Mayoral has presented projects such as “Miró’s Studio,” and retrospectives dedicated to Millares, Tàpies, Saura and Chordà, as well as dialogues between artists such as Miró/Zao Wou-Ki and Francés/Vieira da Silva, which delved into the creative process of the artists and analysed how their work continues to be relevant today.
 
The gallery participates in art fairs such as Art|Basel, Art|Basel Miami, Art|Basel Hong Kong, TEFAF Maastricht, TEFAF New York and ARCOmadrid.

Catalina León's (Buenos Aires, 1981) solo exhibition 'Agñipé' gathers 2014-2024 works in diverse materials like fabrics, plaster, woods, textiles, embroideries and leaves from Barcelona. Far from conceiving her supports as neutral surfaces, the artist understands them as fields charged with histories she reactivates and resignifies through her pictorial practice. Her works integrate marks, stains and accidents in a constant rewriting process, affirming the vitality of materials resisting to be mere passive supports. 

Catalina León's work is built as a delicate balance between her creative action and the capacity of materials that seem to breathe and offer resistance, configuring a "laboratory" where the condition of painting is experimented with. The artist seeks to make each piece a matrix to evoke the vibrant life.
