About the gallery

Chiquita Room is a contemporary art gallery based in Barcelona, which focuses on interdisciplinary and collective work, supporting local and international talent, and connecting them with each other from a deep commitment to listening. The gallery is heir to the artist's book publishing project Chiquita Ediciones and opened its doors in November 2018 as a personal commitment of its director, Laura González Palacios. 


Chiquita Room represents artists and exhibits projects that want to reflect issues relevant to contemporary society with a critical and innovative approach, while exploring the poetics of artistic expression through the interaction between art and other disciplines. The objective is to encourage the public to reflect, analyze or discuss the proposed themes, broadening their points of view and interpretations of the issues raised. 

In its five years of experience, Chiquita Room has maintained a constant activity and presented more than 30 exhibitions, including solo and group shows. During this time, it has published more than twenty publications, has been nominated for the Catalan Association of Art Critics award in 2020 and 2024 and has received the award for Best Gallery in Barcelona in 2021, by Time Out magazine.

Mari Chordà (Amposta, 1942) and Bruno Munari (1907-1998) never met in the real world. Their works may well have drifted along different paths, with barely any conceptual or aesthetic connections. However, the pieces in this exhibition do share a common principle of having been created for play. Lullaby to Rouse a Girl is both an exhibition and a dream: the fantasy of recreating a historical encounter that never took place. As artists, Munari and Chordà took play to be a fundamental aspect of child development and used their works to bring art closer to a much younger audience, fostering their creativity, their emotional universe and their ability to interact with the world. They understood playfulness to be an essential tool for learning, also blurring the lines between childhood and maturity. Their works are interactive materials that encourage us to play, experiment and, hopefully, to create something of their own.

Bruno Munari (1907-1998) was an Italian artist, designer and inventor, who played a key role in 20th-century art, design, and graphic culture. He began his career during the Second Futurism movement and became renowned for his experimental approach to painting, sculpture, film, photography and industrial and graphic design. 

His work explored the intersection of art and everyday life, advocating for utility and functionality in creative practice. Munari also revolutionized education through his focus on play, tactile and kinesthetic learning, and creative development. He dedicated special attention to childhood, designing books, book-objects, and games that stimulated imagination and critical thinking. 

His integrative vision was reflected in his statement: «Art should not be separated from life: things that are pleasing to the eye but useless in practice ought not to exist.” His legacy continues to inspire artists and designers worldwide.  

Mari Chordà (Amposta, 1942) is an artist, poet, and feminist activist. She studied at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and from a very young age began experimenting with pictorial representations of the female body such as the series Vaginals and later, in 1966 in Paris, Autorretrats embarassada (Pregnant Self-Portraits), a series dedicated to pregnancy and motherhood. 

She actively participated in cultural and political initiatives, becoming a key figure in the feminist movements that emerged in the 1960s. In 1968, she founded the cultural space Lo Llar in Amposta, co-founded the bar-library LaSal in Barcelona in 1977, followed a year later by its namesake publishing house, the first explicitly feminist press in Spain.

Her work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern in London, the MUSAC in León, CCCB in Barcelona, and Lo Pati in Amposta, and is part of the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, MACBA, and MNAC. 

As a poet she published Quadern del cos i l’aigua with illustrations of Montse Clavé (1978 and reissued in 2024), Locomotora infidel pel passat (1988), Umbilicals (2000) and No com un so (2022).
