Chiquita Room

Chiquita Room is a contemporary art gallery based in Barcelona, which focuses on interdisciplinary and collective work, supporting local and international talent, and connecting them with each other from a deep commitment to listening. The gallery is heir to the artist's book publishing project Chiquita Ediciones and opened its doors in November 2018 as a personal commitment of its director, Laura González Palacios. 


Chiquita Room represents artists and exhibits projects that want to reflect issues relevant to contemporary society with a critical and innovative approach, while exploring the poetics of artistic expression through the interaction between art and other disciplines. The objective is to encourage the public to reflect, analyze or discuss the proposed themes, broadening their points of view and interpretations of the issues raised. 

In its five years of experience, Chiquita Room has maintained a constant activity and presented more than 30 exhibitions, including solo and group shows. During this time, it has published more than twenty publications, has been nominated for the Catalan Association of Art Critics award in 2020 and 2024 and has received the award for Best Gallery in Barcelona in 2021, by Time Out magazine.

Taking its title from German thinker Walter Benjamin's description of aura, the exhibition seeks to analyze the contemporary manifestation of distance: the distance between things, ideas, and human beings. In the age of connectivity, why does everything seem so far away?

Through various photographic techniques with materials found in libraries, archives and markets in Barcelona and London, Louis Porter (UK, 1977) has inverted, expanded, transposed and modified scientific and educational material such as palmistry manuals, solar eclipse documentation, Victorian trigonometry exercises, encyclopedic illustrations and popular science magazines, to highlight the paradox of distance at the heart of modernity.
